The Lady Dee volleyball team had an up and down week, posting an impressive 3-0 conference win over Clarke last Tuesday, losing to Mount Pleasant (with only two match wins) 3-1, then beating Fairfield and Eddyville-Blakesburg while losing to Ottumwa and Davis County in the Ottumwa Tournament on Saturday.
The Dees drubbed Clarke 25-18, 25-13 and 25-17. The Dees hit the ball well with 37 kills against 29 errors and a total of 109 attacks. Jenna Gronewold had 10 kills, Sydney Hoskins eight, Sophie Waber seven, Tanae Thiravong six, Halstead three, Emma Wenger two and Beary one.
Defensively, Wenger had 12 digs, Hoskins 11, Beary nine, Gronewold eight and Waber six. Maggy Spurgin had two and Thiravong and Halstead one each.
The Dees had seven ace serves on the night led by Beary and Hoskins three each. Wenger had one. The team served 91.7 percent on the night with Wenger 16-16, Beary 20-21, Waber 90-10, Gronewold 8-9, Thiravong 5-6, Hoskins 6-8 and Spurgin 2-2.
Loss to Mount Pleasant
The match against Mount Pleasant was a bit up and down. Albia held an 8-5 lead in the first set behind a kill by Thiravong, but lost the next nine points, mostly on hitting errors, to trail 14-8. An ace serve by Wenger cut the lead to 15-11. Trailing 18-11, the Dees made a solid run with kills by Waber and Hoskins, and a block and a kill by Halstead to make it 18-16, but Mount Pleasant scored the final six of seven points scoring to win 25-17 .
The Dees came out on fire in the second set with Beary scoring on a kill, Wenger scoring three ace serves and Gronewold scoring on a kill to lead 7-0. They were never really threatened after that. Gronewold had a pair of ace serves to make it 13-4 and Thiravong had a pair to boost the lead to 16-7. Five straight Mount Pleasant errors ended the set 25-11 in favor of Albia.
But the Dees struggled in the next two sets, losing 25-15 and 25-14.
For the match the team had 39 kills in 143 attempts led by Gronewold with 10, Thiravong seven, Beary six, Hoskins five, Halstead and Wenger four and Waber three.
Waber led the team in digs with 20 followed by Beary and Wenger 12 each, Hoskins 11, Maia Paxton five and Gronewold and Thiravong three each.
The strongest part of the Dees game was in serving where the team served at 95.8 percent led by Wengers’ 20-20 with five aces. Beary was 13-14 with two aces, Waber 14-14 with four aces, Gronewold 11-12 with four aces, Hoskins 5-5 and Thiravong 6-7.
The Lady Dees went 2-2 in the Ottumwa Tournament, losing to the hosts 21-6, 22-20, beating Fairfield 21-19, 21-15, beating Eddyville-Blakesburg 21-14, 21-15 and losing to Davis County in three sets, 26-24, 20-25, 7-15.
Against Ottumwa, Beary had three kills, four digs and was 5-5 serving. Gronewold had two kills, six digs and was 2-4 serving. Hoskins had two kills, three digs and was 5-5 serving; Thiravong had four kills, 1 dig and was 3-3 serving; Halstead had a kill and two digs; Paxton had a dig; Waber had nine digs and was 7-7 serving and Wenger had five digs and was 3-3 serving.
Against EBF, Beary had three kills, four digs and was 6-6 serving; Gronewold had a kill, five digs and was 14-15 serving with an ace; Hoskins had two kills, two digs and was 3-3 serving; Thiravong had two kills and was 1-2 serving; Halstead had two kills, a block and two digs; Waber had seven digs and was 7-7 serving and Wenger had a kill, five digs and was 7-7 serving.
Against Fairfield, Beary had five kills, seven digs and was 5-5 serving; Wenger had a kill, four digs and was 6-6 serving; Waber had a kill, four digs and was 8-8 serving with three aces; Gronewold had two kills, three digs, and was 9-11 serving with two aces; Hoskins had two kills, Thiravong had two kills and was 5-5 serving with two aces; Halstead had two kills; Paxton was 0-1 serving and Maggy Spurgin was 4-4 serving.
Against Davis County, Beary had two kills, 12 digs and was 9-9 serving, giving her a perfect day at the service line; Wenger had a kill, seven digs and was 9-10 serving with two aces; Waber had 16 digs and was 13-14 serving with three aces; Gronewold had six kills, six digs and was 6-7 serving; Hoskins had two kills, six digs and was 3-4 serving; Thiravong had a kill, two digs and was 7-7 serving with an ace; Halstead had three kills and a dig; Spurgin had two digs and was 1-2 serving and Brooklyn Powless had a dig.
Albia’s set match record is 9-5 and 20-12 in set play.
